I am considering creating a laundrette business from an empty shop I have. Of course the hands-off issue is the main attraction, as well as the fact that it’s a clean business (excuse the pun!).

Can anyone with experience in this field give some suggestion / pearls of wisdom.

Thanks in advance,

Regards, Malik

Hi Malik, When we were between houses we had to use the local " Wash-arama "It was dirty, very inefficient, and had very surly staff. So if you can get over those problems, you will be off to a very good start! The other problem I foresee is the cost of energy. With all energy prices going up and up,you will have to be "expensive" for your punters just so that you can stay in profit. And I hate to think what the machines must cost! No doubt you will do your homework,as you always do. Whatever you decide, good luck. PS They DO need a good launderette in Eastbourne!! LOL

Simon made a good point with regards to energy, also consider the costs of water.

Is there much demand in your area for a launderette?

Simon, Frank: thanks for your replies. Some real food for thought. You are of course both right about the costs of energy & water....

The shop is in the vacinity of a university, a lot os asylum-guest-residents in the area, as well as the regular folk. There is no laundrette anywhere in a 2-3mile radius of the shop.

I'm thinking of going down the hire-purchase line for machines , dryers, soap dispensers etc.... So the initial outlay will be be manageable.

Any more ideas very welcome as this is totally new for me.

Regards, Malik

Thats sounds good Malik. What about the nearest laundrette, how much do they charge? Would you be charging the same or undercutting???

I just typed a few words into Yahoo and it came back with this site

http://www.cleanmachine.co.uk/site/

Hope it helps

Frank! What a fantastic start to my search, thank you so much... That site is a real eye opener. I'll keep you posted, but if you come across anything else in the mean time keep it coming!

Cheers, Malik

Hi Zulfiqar,

Good points mentioned above.

I would advise checking out where the halls of residence are for the students at this university - most have halls on site - check to see if there is a laundrette on the university campus, as our university had one. It might be worth going there and asking someone where the laundrette is, as sometimes they can be hidden out of the way.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

FM.
