Romania is one of the least developed nations in Eastern Europe - illustrated by the fact that they’re currently building the first motorway in the country. This was the major factor in being ranked number 1 in Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun table of the top 20 places to invest in Europe, researched by PricewaterhouseCoopers – if the country is a long way behind then it has a lot of growth potential. (Actually we thought that the programme lacked a lot of important detail, but we thought that they got it spot on in terms of the incredible gains that can be made in this country).
Romania, along with its more developed neighbour Bulgaria, is an applicant country to the EU, with probable membership at the start of 2007. If other countries that have previously joined the EU are good indicators, it is very likely that property prices will continue to rise sharply up to and beyond Romania’s joining date.
GDP growth was 8.3% in 2004 (only bettered in Europe by Latvia).
For the investor this should mean good news as they can take part in the vast amount of growth that is predicted. Property is currently very cheap by western standards, and is still cheaper than most other Eastern European countries.
Romania is home to a rich folklore, the stunning hills and mountains of Transylvania, medieval towns, fairytale castles, fortified churches, a beautiful Black Sea coastline, and the delta of the Danube. These factors mean that steady long term growth in the international tourist market will occur - good news for the longer term investor.
But we feel that for the next few years, the best market to tap into in Romania is the domestic tourist market, so we are now offering apartments on the Black Sea Coast, at the end of that new motorway from Bucharest.
